It's crystal clear and very easy to follow and digest. Zhivago from their pen was indeed a horror. I am going to be doing that now as well. The English-speaking world is indebted to these two magnificent translators, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, for revealing more of its hidden riches than any who have tried to translate the book before. After reading their 2007 translation of War and Peace, Orlando Figes, As a duo, they were twice awarded the PEN Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize. Yes to the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation (so much a team that they are married)! The Norton Critical Edition is the one most read in college literature classes. Cuttlefish in Anna Karenina At the moment I am reading the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. My reading journey was similar to yours. Pevear and Volokhonsky tend towards what I imagine to be a more literal interpretation, complete with stylistic repetitions and even, where appropriate, nineteenth-century usages. The Pevear and Volokhonsky translation is 817 pages. Their 2004 translation of Anna Karenina was an Oprah's Book Club pick. James Wood has focused on “the physicality of Tolstoy's details”—brought to the fore in Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's translation of Anna Karenina, which Wood praised in the New Yorker in 2001. The Maude translation happened to be the first copy of Anna Karenina I owned, purchased before I was in the habit of comparing different versions, and for the sake of continuity of voice, I stuck with them.
